Henry steps down as Montreal head coach

Thierry Henry has stepped down as Montreal head coach after one season in charge.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Henry was appointed by the MLS side in November 2019 following his sacking by Ligue 1 outfit Monaco earlier in the year after just 20 games in charge.

He guided the club to the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs in his solitary campaign, where they were eliminated in the first round by the New England Revolution.

Montreal had to relocate to the United States last year amid the coronavirus pandemic and would have to do so again when the new season starts in April.

Henry, who had been linked with the managerial position at Championship club Bournemouth before Jonathan Woodgate was appointed, cited the continued separation fro…

Man Utd have stopped scoring against the big sides – that must change at Liverpool

Manchester United s record against the so-called big six of the Premier League this season reads zero wins, two defeats and two draws.

They have conceded seven goals, six of them at home to Tottenham, and scored just once – a Bruno Fernandes penalty two minutes into that 6-1 hammering in October.

Fernandes scored their previous goal in these encounters from the spot, too, in a 1-1 draw at Spurs last June. In fact, you have to go back to March 2020 and their 2-0 win at home to Manchester City, the last Old Trafford game played in front of a crowd, for the previous occasion that they scored a goal against a big-six team that wasn t a penalty.

They might be top of the league heading into Sunday s showdown with Liverpool but, for a manager that made an early hab…

Gareth Southgate says Raheem Sterling ‘not particularly happy’ at England snub

Gareth Southgate says Raheem Sterling is “not particularly happy” to have been overlooked for an England recall.

The 28-year-old is one of the national team’s most experienced players but has not added to his 82 caps since December’s World Cup quarter-final exit to France.

Sterling missed the March meet-up through injury and a nagging hamstring issue led to what his camp described as a “mutual decision” to recuperate his body after a rocky first season at Chelsea.

But the forward’s expected return did not come to pass, with the forward the most eye-catching omission from Southgate’s 26-man squad for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine and friendly in Scotland.

No Milan deals for Italian duo, claims agent

Milan do not have the finances to sign Davide Astori or Davide Santon, according to the players agent.

Both the Cagliaria centre-back and the Newcastle United defender have been reported targets of Massimiliano Allegri at San Siro.

However, according to Renzo Contratto, who represents both players, Milan do not have the finances available to make the deals a reality.

He is certainly a player who they are interested in but if there are no finances available then a deal can never happen, Contratto told Milan News.

There was an attempt for him in January but, in this case too, nothing occurred because of a lack of funds.

For Santon, any potential move would mean a return to San Siro, having played for Inter before joining Newcastle in 2011.

Astori is…

Colombia 4/6 to beat Japan in Tuesdays World Cup showdown

Market: Columbia win

Odds:

Japan and Colombia meet in the opening game of Group H at the World Cup finals, with El Tricolor and the Samurai Blue battling for a strong start in Russia.

Tipped by many as the front-runners to top Group H later this month, Colombia will be hoping to replicate the same form that saw them breeze through the 2014 World Cup finals and even beat fellow South Americans Uruguay in the last 16. While they may be coming off the back of consecutive 0-0 draws with fellow finalists Egypt and Australia, we do believe that José Pékerman s side will have to much firepower come kick off. Leading the line for El Tricolor will be Bayern Munich s James Rodríguez along with Radamel Falcao and Villarreal s Carlos Bacca.

United States 1 Mexico 0: Adams lifts hosts to win

The United States claimed their first win over Mexico in more than three years with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in a friendly on Tuesday.

Tyler Adams scored his maiden international goal, his 71st-minute effort lifting USA to their first win against Mexico since April 2015.

Mexico had appeared the better of two understrength sides at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

However, the visitors were reduced to 10 men with 23 minutes remaining after Angel Zaldivar was sent off.

That moment swung the game in USA s favour, and Adams nice finish proved to be the match-winner on the 17th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Mexico, under interim coach Ricardo Ferretti, made the better start and only USA goalkeeper Zack Steffen denied them a 16th-minute lead.
